Yes - beta questions are allowed. Just be sure the body of the question makes very clear what version is in play. Betas can be issued weekly (or even more often), so saying "the latest" or "beta 2" is not helpful - please include the build version in questions or consider voting to close as unclear if the question lacks enough detail for the general user to ...

We allow questions around jail breaking iOS. seems fairly hypocritical to not allow hackintosh questions in light of that. Both are of dubious legality. Why make the hard distinction? I say lose the sentence and leave the general terms of services to cover the legal aspects such as they might arise.

Although there is a new site that exclusively handles software recommendations, we have been hosting good software recommendation questions since the beginning of Ask Different in August 2010. Here is an adaptation of an excellent thread from the Software Recommendation site on how to ask a high-quality question here. Great software recommendation ...

Several sites in the Stack Exchange network have an out-right prohibition of customer support questions. Ask Different can be quite choosy about ensuring a "CS" question that gets closed is of high quality by getting edited while it is closed and then reopened for answers. The why not reasons are typically: We're not here to act as customer support on any ...

TL;DR - moderators generally don't delete posts until they have several down votes or constructive comments if there's even a hint of an answer contained in the post. I'm seeing a lot of "not an answer" flags when there are bad answers, answers that lack a reference, wrong answers, or answers that people presumably disagree with or have a pet peeve with ...

In a nutshell - here are some statements that I hope are fact based and hard to dispute for anyone: We don't police agreements/NDA - we do strive to produce great answers to specific questions. The "NDA situation" is complicated (and there are 4 different versions of the NDA that I've seen or believe to exist). We will lose some people and we won't get all ...

NDA is just one of several reasons why questions about non-public beta software don't work well on Ask Different, Can I ask about not-yet-publicly released OS? lists the others. So even with the NDA partially lifted, I still think that questions about iOS 9/OS X El Capitan need to wait until at least public betas are available. Also, we are not here to ...

Quick answer I know, but my vote says no. Hackintosh specific questions are largely user/hardware/software specific. In my opinion, they won't add too much value to the site, they will just be clutter. While it is possible to answer such questions, they aren't going to add a whole lot of long-lasting value. On the flip side, we will also get huge questions ...

As a counterpoint (I would just comment, but I can't put images in comments): This is what we see on the flagging page: Under "it is not an answer" we see "It should possibly be an edit, a comment, another question, or deleted altogether". It sounds like you are considering all the flags as requests for deletion when the flagging page mentions 3 other ...

Yes it makes sense to increase the scope from just software to include hardware, products and services. The important thing is that the answer should be able to quote some actual measurement or definitive statement that can be verified

Software Recommendation questions are allowed here and they will almost always be closed if they don't follow the guidelines for asking a good question in general and in specific listing detailed requirements: How should I ask about getting a software recommendation? More broadly, recommendation questions also should be closed as recommendations if they: ...

To complement answers 1 and 2 … Apple Developer Forums In the pre-release area, at least some of Apple's spaces are visible to the public. At the time of writing, three: iOS 9 beta OS X 10.11 beta watchOS 2 beta. Side notes This is not an encouragement to have Apple Developer Forums misused for discussions that are not developer-oriented. Neither is ...

Another aspect to consider is whether accepting hackintosh questions helps improve the quality of Ask Different. Most of the questions I've seen so far fall into the category "I own XYZ. Haven't tried anything yet but do you think I can install OS X? Where should I start?". In general, answers are (necessarily) vague and usually link to other sites. They ...

This is tricky because of the new open Betas that Apple are expanding into a wider audience. I am running Beta Yosemite, maybe next year they will do the same for iOS? But, as a whole I think that if it's not released, it's not up for discussion. Anyone using these products for anything other than idle interest will know about the associated dev forums ...

My opinion is that they should be acceptable (and not off-topic) much in the same way Siri and Messages were. While they are are technically "beta", I think it is largely in name only as the general public has easy access to them from the default panel in www.iCloud.com. I think they also come very close to fitting into the FAQ criteria as they really aren'...

This is a good question and one that will be hard to definitively answer, although we could try to define, over time, what is and isn't covered by this particular close reason. One type of question we do get regularly asked are those related to the legality of something. Of course legality may not necessarily refer to a potentially criminal action, but ...

Not to be argumentative here (hah!) It seems that the definition of "Off-Topic" is fairly clear (IMHO) in that the subject matter is something that is open to interpretation, varies with your experience and/or level of expertise and can provide a multitude of "correct" answers. The types of questions outlined in the description seem to be exactly the kind ...

I tend to drop a line into the 'other' category if there is some doubt, if the post needs simply a more experienced eye cast over it for confirmation, or if it definitely needs migrating to the question body itself; a task I'm assuming only mods can do. I do wish there was a sub-heading for 'not an answer' to split the 3 possibilities - comment, new ...

I wish to build a case for limited scope increase of itunes-connect. Assuming I get a large support in terms of net up votes, we might assume a general consensus to change the [faq] officially to endorse a limited scope of book-selling, music-selling, developer-program related questions. Here are the sort of questions I'd love to see more of in the future. ...

A challenging question. There's the wish to be inclusive, and supportive towards all fair and reasonable uses of Apple software. I do wish those things, but for Ask Different I believe that the answer to bmike's question must be: no – please, let's maintain the extremely well-formed and predictable relationship between osx and Apple hardware. … ...

While I got hit with a big -185, my overall rank or reputation didn't drop a lot (thankfully).

With the points mentioned here, I'm no longer inclined to edit things. The current discussion seems heavily in favor of keeping the wording as is.

My intent isn't to fix any of these questions, but if that happens and they get reopened, that's totally fine and people can look at the revisions to understand why / when close and open happens. The open questions really aren't about iOS 7 at all. The AirDrop one is a long standing question about a feature that is concrete and well documented. It just so ...

Yes! We're always sad to see people leave, but we also know sometimes there is a good reason to shut a door and move on with new interests. Most new accounts can simply delete themselves. If you can't help yourself to deletion, just fill out this handy form and we or the team that runs the site will see what we can do: https://apple.stackexchange.com/help/...

A lot of good things have been written and discussed already, let me throw in my few cents as well. Pro Does it fit in: In a way iTunes Connect is an Apple service like iCloud and a lot of other stuff. We do have the software-recommendation tag. This might be a good place to talk about when that is appropriate.

Was not significant this time around, just lost a measly 85 rep points: But I had a 'Month of Ouch' back in January:

Ok, here's mine - from 4th down to 1,120th! I don't live for rep, but admit I was looking forward to breaking the 50K barrier. Guess I'll have to wait a bit longer for that now. :( Oh well, patience is a virtue. LOL
